What
You Can Do 1. Write to your local union, state union and
international and ask them how much they own in Israel Bonds and the reasons
they do so. If you don't get an answer call. |

Example: Antonia Cortese Secretary-Treasurer American Federation of Teachers 555 New Jersey Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20001 Dear Ms. Cortese: I’m an AFT member in the West Haven,
CT local for several decades. In the
financial report of 2008 I notice some $880,000 worth of investments labeled
“Other Bonds”. I understand the AFT
owns State of Israel bonds. How many
Israel bonds does the AFT own and what is their total value? I ask this because I object to my union
owning bonds in a country that so violently mistreats Palestinians and their
unions. Palestinian citizens of Israel
are 2nd class citizens and can’t own over 90% of the land. Palestinians in the Occupied Territories
are surrounded by settlements, roads and army bases and most have been
forbidden to visit Jerusalem for many years.
Their union federation offices have been repeatedly bombed by Israeli
forces. This last winter hundreds of
Palestinian children were killed when Israel attacked the Gaza Strip. Unions all
over the world are standing up for Palestinian human rights by boycotting
Israel goods and challenging Israeli academics to speak out against their
government’s policies. Certainly the
AFT ought to join in this effort and
immediately sell off its Israel Bonds. Eagerly
awaiting your answer. Sincerely, |
